Statement on Social Justice

As a grassroots peace and justice community organization, Peace Action WI is committed to abolishing nuclear weapons and shutting down nuclear power.

We work to end militarism, advance social justice and to end environmental racism in the US and the world.

We advocate for a world without racism, sexism, classism and for the rights of LGBTQ people. We denounce  multinational corporate based systems of inequality, where vast sums of wealth are concentrated in the bank accounts of a few. We decry the military industrial complex and control of the arms manufacturers over our government and media.

We believe all people have a right to self-determination- Native Americans, women, ethnic minorities, gender oppressed people. We believe in the rights of nature, we strive to make the connection between militarism and climate change. We are opposed to resource and labor exploitation in the US and internationally. We support human right movements locally, nationally and abroad.

Our Story

In March, 1977, we were founded as the Mobilization for Survival.  We were part of a national network of 125 national peace, environmental and justice networks. We also opposed nuclear weapons and power and called for an end to the arms race. We supported groups working toward social justice and to move military spending to fund human needs.

In January, 1996, we allied with National Peace Action which formed out of the Sane/Nuclear Freeze movement that advocated for end testing of atomic weapons and their abolition. It’s one of the largest grassroots peace and disarmament group in the country. In 1999, we became Peace Action WI, with a focus on community involvement to oppose war and peace education.

We adhere to the principle of nonviolence as the way to solve problems of war, human rights abuse, inequality and to protect the environment.

Actions:

organizing 

We sponsor the weekly Stand for Peace that meets at different corners in the Milwaukee area every Saturday at noon, since the invasion of Iraq in 1983.

We have a website with updates on peace and justice issues and an online calendar.

We sponsor speakers, films, and community meetings that focus on ending militarism and for social justice.

We publish the Mobilizer Newsletter bi-monthly,

We visit elected representatives to discuss peace and foreign policy issues,.

We help to coordinate the End the Wars Coalition.

We call for demonstrations to oppose US wars of aggression.

Our organization is guided by the Steering Committee of Peace Action of WI. Members are eligible to join, we have an election at our Annual Meeting in November.

We are a 501© 3 community organization that is kept alive by scores of volunteers and donations from our members.
